No one will soon forget 11:01 pm, Tuesday, November 4 when Barack Obama was declared the winner of the race for the presidency. The crowd of volunteers, staff, and supporters gathered at EastSquare ArtWorks roared their delight. With streaming tears, they hugged new and old friends declaring that a new era had arrived.
Election day started at 6:30 am for volunteers who were at polling places to hand out the slate of candidates and explain the voting process to Democratic voters. We can thank them and all of the poll greeters since One-Stop Early Voting began Oct. 16 for performing such an important function. Without them, we could have lost many votes for President and/or Judges.
Canvassing and phone calls began at 9 am as hundreds of voters who had not yet voted were contacted to remind them of their opportunty to do so, and to offer information about polling places and rides to the polls. New door hangers went out to replace those distributed previously that said "Vote Today"; each precinct had a distict doorhanger with the correct polling place printed on it. Drivers were mobilized all day to get voters to the polls. Poll observers and runners entered ID's of those voting to remove them from the lists so that efforts could be concentrated on those who had not yet voted.
